So, what is Windows Virtual Desktop?

In March 2019, Microsoft announced the start of their public preview of Microsoft Windows Virtual Desktop, along with that came the first look at the Multi-session Windows 10 VM.

Windows Virtual Desktop is a unique Desktop and Application virtualisation service. Providing a fully functioning multi-session Windows 10 desktop and Office 365 ProPlus experience on any user device that runs exclusively on Microsoft Azure. Giving IT administrators the ability to deploy and scale their Windows Desktops and apps in minutes while getting built-in security and compliance features.

Key features include:

  • Publishing as many host pools as your organisation requires to accommodate all workloads.
  • You can bring your own image.
  • Deploy Multi-session pooled non-persistent desktops and/or individually owned personal persistent desktops.
  • IT Administrators no longer are required to manage infrastructure services.

Users connect to IT Assigned Desktop and Applications via a Windows Desktop Client Application, providing a seamless user experience to a fully-fledged Windows 10 Desktop image, and the Office application suit.

What does Citrix Cloud offer to Windows Virtual Desktop?

With the latest redefining of the virtual desktop and application landscape with Windows Virtual Desktop, customers will no longer be required to choose between server or desktop operating systems to provide quality high-density app and desktop virtualisation services.

But how does Citrix fit into this new landscape? WVD on its own is a very powerful solution, providing end to end user virtualisation, and if it meets the customers’ needs, can be deployed as a separate solution. Many customers will require more than just a standalone deployment of WVD, integrating Citrix Cloud gives IT Administrators the ability to manage on-premises and cloud hybrid environment solutions. Leveraging Citrix provides access to industry leading HDX technologies, Virtual Apps and Desktops deliver an excellent user experience on a wide variety of devices and network connections, equalling or surpassing the local PC experience. Citrix Content collaboration, Intelligent resource and profile management technologies to deliver the best user experience in Workspace Environment Manager, and Access Control with enhanced security policies for SaaS, Web and virtual apps, application Single Sign on and public internet Web Filtering policies.

Using Citrix, you can manage these new app and desktop workloads alongside existing on-premises deployments for maximum flexibility in your cloud adoption.
